What to put in your first aid kit

Everyone should always a carry a first aid kit. Whether to treat existing medical conditions, treating blisters or other injuries and illnesses that might come up while hiking.

Of course, it is even more mandatory if you are a guide, to build a kit hat has everything for any occasion that might arise. Key word is here is to ‘build’. Even if your an weekend hiker, you should build a kit that suits you and the type and length of hike you are doing. Don’t just build and carry but learn how to use it. There are institutions in the UAE that teach first aid courses, one in particular teaches Wilderness First Aid.

So what should a weekend hiker’s first aid kit look like? Here are some basic items. of course guides are expected to carry more, including splints, etc)

  • Painkillers (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Paracetamol
  • Antihistamines
  • Medications if you have certain conditions i.e. diabetes, etc.
  • Blister kit to prevent and treat
  • Bandages (Compression, Triangular), Crepe roller, Swabs, Micropore tape, Adhesive and non-adhesive dressings, bandaids, Strapping tape, moist burn pads, Foamie Donut
  • Imodium for diarrhea
  • Magnesium for cramps
  • Antiseptic ointment or spray, Betadine
  • Disposable gloves
  • Electrolytes
  • Emergency blanket
  • Sam Splint
  • Tweezers
  • Sanitary Pads including Tampons

Other items that can be used in instances of first aid (that are not necessarily in the kit):

  • Duct tape
  • Cord
  • Multi-function tool
  • Signaling mirror
  • Whistle
  • Emergency blanket

Other points:

  • Personally pack your kit so you know where things are when you need them
  • Check your items for expiry dates and replace

Hope having a first aid kit will give you more reassurance during your next hike. Again it is worth learning how to use the items in your kit and for what instances..
